The Countdown Begins | 2017 Rip Curl Cup, Padang Padang
In just a few weeks the surfing world’s attention will turn to the Indonesian island of Bali when the Rip Curl Cup returns to the storied lefthand barrels of Padang Padang. The opening ceremony kicks off the action to surfing’s premier renegade contest on July 9.
Garut & Pepen Get Tubed | Made For Waves | Boardshorts by Rip Curl
Garut Widiarta is about to face the biggest test of his year – the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang. Show up unprepared against the world’s best barrel hunters at the Balinese Pipeline, and you’re guaranteed to fail. But Garut is no slacker. He’s the 2014 Rip Curl Cup Champion, with a near perfect attendance record at Padang when the place is going off. Problem is, Padang doesn’t break nearly as often as we’d all like. So where can a guy like Garut find the right training ground for an event like this? Lucky enough, he happens to live in the most wave-rich archipelago in the world, so it’s not really about finding a place – it’s about picking a place. So before the start of the waiting period got too close, Garut grabbed longtime Bali pro Pepen Hendrick and trekked from Nias to Sumba and everywhere in between. Pepen has mastered every Indonesian reefbreak under the sun, and even with minimal swell, the veteran knew where he and Garut could go for a knife-sharpening practice run. What do you think… was the Search worth it? And, could it translate into a second Rip Curl Cup for Garut Widiarta?

Nixon | Moments to remember: Greek surf mission
Greece wouldn't be your first bet when choosing a surf destination. Marlon Lipke, Yannick De Jager and Gony Zubizarreta have had an eye on this dreamy Mediterranean location for years now. Unfortunately they never found the opportunity to attempt the travel. Chances to score are always very low considering the consistency of swells and the difficulty to predict conditions. Timing is key, local connexions are priceless. All they needed was a call. A friend and local shaper guaranteed them that the conditions displayed on the weather forecast would turn the coast into an idyllic playground, and it did. One day of swell, not two, and it was all gone. The crew surfed 2 different waves during 9 hours before finding a slab on their way back home just one hour before dark... Greece, really? No one had surfed it before and Marlon and Gony could not get the best waves because..."we could barely move our arms anymore"... but it was a perfect slab with sick righthand barrels. Greece is one of those countries which just magically takes you by the hand and guides you through its natural and cultural beauty. The people are very friendly and welcoming, something that actually reminded the crew of Portugal and Italy. It was even more rewarding when to top it all with great waves which actually turned out much better than they could ever imagine. http://www.nixon.com
Restaurants Is the Tour's Guilty Pleasure
You've tuned in to Stab and Corona's semi-live broadcast of the CT's finest peripheral moments. In this Beach Chair episode we've landed on the shores of Tavarua and motored alongside it's fantastic barrier reef to point lenses toward the action taking place at Restaurants in and around the 2017 Outerknown Fiji Pro. It's a special stretch, as picturesque and mechanical as left handers come. During low tide fins tickle the live coral heads, at high, there's a skatepark of pockets and high performance opportunities. While the weather didn't resemble its usual postcard self, for a short period there was enough energy bending into the island's sweet spot to entice the likes of John Florence, Julian Wilson, Matt Wilkinson, Wiggolly Dantas, Connor O'Leary, super coach Glen 'Micro' Hall (once again looking fabulous on two fins) and commentary royalty Barton Lynch and Martin Potter. There's little need to dive into descriptive language, so please allow our cast to entertain for the next couple minutes.
